Twitter Pays Respect to Nelson Mandela, Confusion Between Mandela and Morgan Freeman Occurs [See Photos]
Today, the world has lost one of its greatest leaders, Nelson Mandela.
Presidents of various nations, royalties and celebrities around the world had expressed their feelings about the passing of one of the greatest leaders in the 20th century.
Twitter however had confused the passing of Nelson Mandela with Morgan Freeman. Nelson Mandela had died at the age of 95, on Thursday after succumbing to a lung infection that he had gotten after being in the hospital for almost 3 months. Mandela was then treated at home until Thursday when news that the former President of South Africa had died peacefully.
Twitter had paid their respects but towards the wrong person, Morgan Freeman. Instead, in just a few minutes people had taken to twitter believing that Morgan Freeman had died.
People may have been confused until reports showed that Morgan Freeman is doing just fine. The premiere of the life and work of Mandela was aired in the U.K, "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom." Idris Elba, who played the role of Mandela in the movie, gave his thoughts on Mandela's death.
"I am stunned at this very moment, in mourning with the rest of the world and Madiba's family," stated Elba, adding, "We have lost one of the greatest human beings to have walked this earth, I only feel honored to be associated with him. He is in a better place now. What an honor it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela, and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."
Morgan Freeman also gave his thoughts on Mandela's death as he too did play the role of the Mandela.
"Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century, Nelson Mandela was a man of incomparable honor, unconquerable strength, and unyielding resolve - a saint to many, a hero to all who treasure liberty, freedom and the dignity of humankind. As we remember his triumphs, let us, in his memory, not just reflect on how far we've come, but on how far we have to go. Madiba may no longer be with us, but his journey continues on with me and with all of us," stated Freeman.
