Rebels forward Luke Jones has been suspended for two Super Rugby matches for a dangerous lifting tackle on Bulls left winger Bjorn Basson.

Jones was shown a yellow card for the tackle made during Friday's fixture at AAMI Stadium.

SANZAR judicial officer Mike Heron imposed the ban on Sunday, saying he had taken into account flanker Jones' clean record, guilty plea and his immediate concern for the uninjured Basson in reducing what would have been a four-match ban.

However, Herron said that "tip" tackles remained a cause for concern in Super Rugby 2012 and suggested harsher penalties could be introduced.

It was the sixth citing for tip tackles this season.
