Sometimes the unexpected happens, and it makes for a good news.

Two women survived a massive train collision today (Friday) during peak hour.

Paramedics and rescue personnel expressed joyful disbelief over what seems to be a miraculous high-impact smash, in which car parts are thrown over 100m away, and the women were trapped inside - but both alive.

Adelaide Now sources said it took 30 minutes of work to free the women inside the crushed car.

The train came to rest nearly 500m away from the Greens Rd rail crossing in Dandenong South.

"It's a miracle they survived as the car is virtually unrecognisable," said ambulance group manager Andrew Watson, noting paramedics were left with no choice but to treat the passengers through the car windows.

The elder woman, estimated to be in her 60s suffered a deep cut to her forehead, a suspected fractured skull and shoulder and hip injuries.

Another woman in her late 20s suffered minor injuries, including bruising.

Both were taken to The Alfred hospital.
