A couple of years have passed since the highly popular television sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” (“HIMYM”) aired its last episode, but its loyal fans are still upset over what they say as “not at all legendary” finale.

The controversial episode, titled “Last Forever,” marked the end of the CBS comedy series, which ran for nine seasons. In the finale, Ted Mosby’s (Josh Radnor) wife, played by Cristin Milioti, got sick and eventually died. After 208 episodes, and what seemed to be an endless tale of how Ted met his mother’s children, the beloved lead male star still ended up with his pal and ex-girlfriend Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders).

Fast forward to 2016, and the “HIMYM” fans can’t still get over how the show ended things. They took to Twitter to express their sentiments.

“How I Met Your Mother” followed the story of Ted, a New-York based architect and professor who tells his children the long and winding tale of how he met the love of his life. Ted is constantly surrounded by his best friends: the ideal couple Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), the well-dressed playboy Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin, a Canadian news anchor. Actor Bob Saget lent his voice as the voice of the present-day Ted, the one who acts as the show’s narrator.

The show grew popular for its witty lines, uncanny yet hilarious antics and out-of-the-box storylines. Fans were able to identify themselves with the “HIMYM” gang, as they dealt with friendship, relationships, broken hearts, careers and personal conflicts. Fans of “How I Met Your Mother” loyally followed all 208 episodes, from Ted’s relentless pursuit of true love to Barney’s playbook and the challenges that he accepted, and even down to slap fests and Robin’s past career as a Canadian pop singer.

However, “HIMYM” fans were left flabbergasted – and not in a good way – with the sitcom’s final episode. They blasted the show for coming up with what they claim as a disappointing ending, and the media were also not shy in sharing their negative reviews.

“Killing the mom is bad enough, but making this a Ted-and-Robin love story is bailing on the central conceit of the show,” Vulture said in an article. “You might even call it a slap in the face.”

For its part, The Telegraph noted the “unconvincing changes in character,” such as Ted still having feelings for Robin despite him saying that he got over her for good. “That left a particularly sour taste and made it feel as though the rest of Ted's nine season-long monologue had been a waste of time,” The Telegraph commented.

Entertainment Weekly had a more neutral review. “This isn’t a perfect ending; the ground covered in the finale could have filled an entire season instead of being crammed into a single hour. But a straightforward, fairytale ending for Ted and Tracy wouldn’t have served viewers, and it would have been beyond boring.”

“How I Met Your Mother” creator Craig Thomas defended the show’s ending, pointing out that they did the “HIMYM ” finale based on real life's twists and turns.

Meanwhile, Radnor gave his own take of reminiscing about “How I Met Your Mother.” He posted a photo of his niece wearing red cowboy boots, which he captioned, “Saw my niece today. Pretty sure she wore those to taunt me.” In “HIMYM,” Ted owned a similar pair of boots, which he insisted looked good on him, despite everyone hating it.
