FC Bayern Munich employed Pep Guardiola's system of possession football as they shattered Manchester City FC in a 3-1 victory.

The German giants held the ball for an astounding rate of 66 per cent against a top-tier team in City.

Ace midfielder Franck Ribery opened up the scoring with just 7 minutes into the match by delivering a powerful shot from just outside the box to the top left corner, beating Blues goalkeeper Joe Hart in the process.

The English club was forced to play long balls because of the pressure that Bayern has employed every time they had the ball in their possession, thereby frustrating City and limiting their attempts at goal.

It was not until the 56th minute when the score was doubled by Thomas Muller, with a perfectly-timed run and pass from the back from defender Dante, getting the better of Joe Hart, 1v1.

The third goal of the night came off a counter-attack after intercepting the ball at midfield, with Arjen Robben providing the finishing touch using his weaker right foot, placing the ball at the bottom right corner.

Guardiola was delighted with the way his team played against an equally world-class club and pointed out the difference that midfielder Philipp Lahm makes.

"We pressured them well when we weren't in possession and so forced City to play long balls, which we were able to win. We moved the ball around well," Guardiola told uefa.com.

"Ever since Philipp Lahm started playing further up the pitch, we have started to create more chances."

"We are happy to play against a big club and to play like this. I like coming to England and when my team plays like this, I am very happy. We are delighted with our display."
