Canadian mixed martial artist Georges St. Pierre (GSP) has successfully defended his welterweight title from Johny Hendricks in the main event of UFC 167.

GSP won via controversial split decision. According to the site MMAdecisions.com, all sixteen media members have favoured the score to Hendricks, and not GSP.

Both fighters did have their own dominant rounds. For the first round, it was very close. Both GSP and Hendricks had takedowns. However, GSP had the submission attempt and he had out landed Hendricks in vital blows. Hendricks tapped twice on GSP's right thigh. GSP let go but referee Yamasaki did not see the taps so the fight went on. Hendricks dominated Round 2 and 4, while GSP clearly won the third round and probably the fifth too, based on stats. The two judges' decision was probably influenced by the first round.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White has expressed his feelings about the outcome of the fight. White thought that Hendricks won and he wants to book a rematch as soon as possible.

It is not really clear if a rematch is really possible at this time because GSP has states that he would like to take a break and step away from the cage.

"I need to hang up my gloves," said GSP. "I have to go away for a little while, at least," GSP added. "I want to say thank you to UFC from the bottom of my heart," he concluded.

White understands and supports GSP's position but he feels positive that GSP can change his mind.

According to White, GSP is UFC's biggest pay-per-view star. A rematch between GSP and Hendricks are guaranteed to produce millions of pay-per-view buys. White will probably do the best the he can get GSP back on the cage despite his current thoughts on taking a break from fighting.
