UFC News: Ronda Rousey To Avenge Teammates, Demands Bethe Correia
Bethe Correia got Ronda Rousey's attention. Head honcho Dana White corrals her and tells her best draw to stand down.
Correia (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) thrust into the top of Rousey potential opponents when she yet again dominated one of the so-called "Four Horsewomen" of women's mixed martial arts. She disposed Jessamyn Duke and Shayna Baszler all via knockouts. The latest, the domination of Baszler (15-9 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in UFC 177 just happened last Saturday via a brutal punch that ended the fight.
Even before the fight, the Brazilian fighter was already talking about the prospect of facing Rousey next, now she got the champion's ears. While Rousey has expressed that she wants that fight too, fans of both camps might have to hold their horses as White has other things in mind for his prized fighter. The leader of the Four Horsewomen must be raring to avenge her fellow teammates but White is still looking at the mega-fight between Rousey and Gina Carano.
"There's a long list for Rousey waiting right now, so we'll see what happens," UFC President Dana White said per MMA Junkie. "She's on the list. It's a short list."
As soon as Correia called out Rousey after her win, White relayed that reigning women's bantamweight champion texted her afterwards saying, "I want that fight. I want it now." Rousey even went on to say that she wants to be the one to deal the Brazilian her first loss. The stumbling block to the meeting of the paths between the rising fighters is Carano and possibly, former boxing champion turned MMA fighter Holly Holm.
As of now, White is not ready to put his biggest draw on the line against Correia because of the appeal of the rivalry of the Brazilian against the "Four Horsewomen." He however clarifies that Correia moved up in the ladder for the title fight not because of the rivalry but due to her performance last Saturday. The controversial promoter likened the punch that ended the bout to the power of Phil Baroni versus Dave Menne.
That improvement and her ability to finish off her last two opponents are testaments of her dedication to improve her game. Correia insists that she already developed a game ready to take on the game's best in Rousey.
"I feel that I was born a fighter," Correia said. "It just took a while to find myself in the sport, and just to compete in the UFC is a huge feat for anyone. To fight Shayna, she's fought a lot of the top-10 fighters out there and beaten them, so it's a huge feat for anyone to do that, and I want a chance at Ronda at some point."
