Episode 2 of season 1 of CBS's Under the Dome highlights the big fire that burned down the house of Chester's Mill Chief of Police Howard “Duke” Perkins, played by Jeff Fahey. While the episode, “The Fire” featured the people of Chester’s Mill and established the familiarity and close relationship cultivated among its people in the county, it was used as an instrument to bring into being the overall conflict of the hit TV series.

In agreement to James “Big Jim” Rennie (Dean Norris), Rev Lester Coggins (Ned Bellamy) accidentally burned Duke’s house following his death. Though the reverend simply wanted to destroy the evidence regarding operations that involve propane he and Big Jim had gotten themselves into, the drape in Duke’s house caught fire from the paper the reverend burned. It got bigger until he couldn’t stop it.

The reverend, however, was more of a collateral damage, and so was the house in Big Jim’s big plans. Rennie got himself mixed-up in propane-related operations and he wanted to bury all evidence that would link him to it. He became restless about the propane and even spoke to Duke about it before the police chief’s death.

Jim first wanted to locate the evidence at the Chief of Police office. He was in the middle of searching for it from Duke’s files when Linda, Duke’s deputy and close friend, walked in on him. To hide his big plans, he pretended he was looking for the will Duke left and handed it to Linda, who later found out that the chief left everything to her, including his big house.

Jim knew he had to destroy the evidence after Linda informed him that Duke told her of the propane cases and Jim decided to get the reverend working. This led to Duke’s house getting burned down.

The whole community gave a hand to keep the fire out. Forming a line everyone helped. This has surprised Los Angeles entertainment attorney Carolyn Hill (Aisha Hinds), thinking “where she comes from, no one knows she exists,” let alone gets help at a time like this, expressing disbelief to her partner, Alice, who was trapped with her and their daughter, Under the Dome.

With Duke’s house gone, will there be an investigation as to how the reverend was caught in the middle of it? Will his plans and that of Big Jim’s come out in the offing soon enough? How will Jim and the reverend cover their tracks in their attempts to burn the evidence linking them to propane-related operations they have apparently instigated. Does it even have any connection to the Dome that isolated the Chester’s Mill from practically the whole of society? Or are they just paranoid and a separate problem will soon get discovered.

More episode highlights:

Army veteran, Dale Barbie Barbara (Mike Vogel) found himself looking for his dog tags which he lost in struggle against Chester’s Mill’s investigative reporter, Julia Shumway, (Rachelle Lefevre). He asked Julia if she found it only to lie to her at the end of the day when he finally found it. This scene also established that Julia may begin to not trust him as he cast doubt when he said he found it at the bathroom mirror and not the cabin where he accidentally killed her husband.

Crazy, hot lover Junior Rennie, played by Alexander Koch, continue to get featured as Big Jim's emotionally disturbed son. In “The Fire,” he followed Barbie at the cabin and they had a struggle. The scene continued to feature Junior as one who completely lost his mind, detached from reality. Barbie was clearly unaware of who Angie was when Junior confronted him about his girlfriend. In the basement where Junior trapped her, Angie resorted to mind games to fight Junior, to no avail.

The radio station appeared to be the only place Under the Dome that could connect the dots. Radio Engineer Dodee Weaver (Jolene Purdy) heard in high frequency the exchange among military officials and experts set out to assess the situation. Julia saw military men in uniform talking to the radio, and being as nosy as a journalist as she is, she decided the radio station as the best place to be and she walked in hearing the conversation radio engineer and DJ Phil Bushey (Nicholas Strong) were listening to. Julia decided to air what she heard, “that they were Under the Dome and the military doesn’t know what it is,” concluding that they have no idea what trapped them.

The residents of Chester’s Mill continue to cope with the challenges brought being trapped under the Dome. Some areas have their electricity working again, more accidents happened. The two students led Joe McAlister (Colin Ford), joined by his friend, embarked on a search of his own.

What really are they looking for?
