The largest union representing Telstra (ASX: TLS) employees has come out swinging regarding the offshoring of Telstra jobs and customers’ personal information to India.

Employees originally advised the Communications Workers Union (CWU) that 30 Cable Assigner positions are set to go to India but following investigations by the CWU it now appears there will be upward of 300 jobs lost.

Divisional Assistant Secretary Burt Blackburne condemned the offshoring of jobs to India and expressed concern for the security of the Telecommunications network under Telstra’s proposal.

“Telstra needs to come clean about how many positions will be effected, and how it will safeguard the security of the information sent overseas.”

“At a time when phone hacking is in the news it is unbelievable that cable records which show details of cables entering private and business premises are to go offshore” Mr. Blackburne said.

India is a politically unstable country and the union fears where these records may end up, the CWU said.
