Working people in the Northern Rivers are concerned about what an Abbott led Coalition Government would mean for them, according to Secretary of Unions NSW, Mark Lennon, who has spoken to labor forces in the area over the last 24 hours.

Mr Lennon was in Casino yesterday talking to cleaners and has attended a meeting of council workers at Lismore Council at 5:30am this morning as part of his trip to the Northern Rivers.

"Working people in the Northern Rivers are concerned that, if elected, Tony Abbott will bring back the worst aspects of WorkChoices," he said.

"Having spoken to scores of working people in the Northern Rivers area there is also a great deal of concern surrounding Mr Abbott's plans to cut superannuation and close trades training centres."

John Beacroft, a former Lismore City Council employee with more than 30 years of experience, said "I saw what John Howard did with his worklaws and I'm concerned Tony Abbott will get in and try and do the same thing. Tony Abbott's plan to cut Trades Training Centres won't affect me, but I'm worried about the next generation."

Terry Hayden who works at Ballina City Council said "The potential loss of wages and conditions puts my family at risk. I have four kids and a mortgage and it's tough enough as it is. I'm already worried about having enough after I retire and Labor's plan to increase superannuation couldn't come soon enough."

Gerald Tory a Timber Worker from Grafton said "Before the last election Tony Abbott and the Liberals brought in WorkChoices and it's the same Tony Abbott now as it was then. When Tony Abbott speaks on workplace issues he can't speak without using weasel words. I have no doubt he'll bring back WorkChoices."

Echoing these concerns, the Secretary of Unions NSW said, "For working people, there's a stark contrast between the two major parties at this federal election."

"My message to locals is this: working people in the Northern Rivers will be much worse off under an Abbott government," Mr Lennon said.

Lismore High School, Richmond River High School, Wilson Park School, Kadina High School, Bonalbo Central School, Casino High School and Kyogle High School would all lose access to local Trades Training Centres under a Coalition Government headed by Abbott.

"Tony Abbott announced in the federal budget that he would scrap funding for Trades Training Centres. We should be encouraging young people who want training and want to get a job - not discouraging them." said Mr Lennon.

Under an Abbott led Coalition government, the average employee that is 30 today would be over $100,000 worse off at retirement without Labor's planned increase to superannuation.

Even after signing a pledge not to revise workplace laws, Tony Abbott said he could not guarantee that he would not make some changes.

"The truth is he Tony Abbott is ideologically committed to WorkChoices - it's in his DNA." said Mr Lennon.

Mr Lennon will be visiting ten seats across the state to raise awareness of the differing policies of the two major parties.

"Unions NSW is working hard to ensure working people are aware of the major policies affecting them at the upcoming election."

"Unions will continue to educate working people and campaign across the state for better outcomes." said Mr Lennon.
