Want to wow your guests with a completely unique pet not seen outside the local aquarium? Why not try having your own jellyfish in a desktop tank.

A Duke University Biology and Environmental Science Alumnus has developed a jellyfish friendly tank to keep your little invertebrates in. Alex Andon has started a business called Jellyfish Art and reworked an existing fish tank to be jellyfish safe. Jellyfish can't live in existing fish tanks because the little globs will get sucked into traditional tank filtration systems and are splattered to death. Thanks to Andon there's now a way to keep the little jellyfish safe.

The reworked Desktop Jellyfish Tank pulls water through a layer of rocks at the bottom of the tank. The water is then pulled on one side of cylindrical tank to the surface where it goes back down the other side of the tank to get sucked up once again by the rocks. This design allows the jellyfish to safely stay in the middle of the tank. The tank can hold 7 gallons of water and can house up to five jellyfish. There is a large built-in LED lamp that can illuminate your jellyfish in different colors of light.

The rocks are seeded with live nitrifying bacteria which break down the jellyfish waste. This doesn't mean that you can just let the little critters swim around the tank without any maintenance. You need to change the water in the tank each week to keep the jellyfish happy and healthy.

The jellyfish provided aren't the stinging kind. The moon jellyfish are freshwater species that are colorless and don't actually sting. Each jellyfish will cost $39 and can be shipped overnight from the company's breeding center. Frozen plankton which the jellyfish feed on are also available.

To get your own jellyfish tank you need to pledge $350 on Kickstarter to reserve a tank and get a voucher for a starter kit that includes the tank, three jellyfish and plankton. Jellyfish Art ships internationally but you would need to add $90 for shipping costs and they don't add the jellyfish. You'll have to get it from local suppliers.
