This is indeed disheartening news that Seven-time Formula One racing champion Michael Schumacher is in critical condition after he hit his head while skiing with his son Mick on December 29, 2013. The German driver is going through brain surgery for a head injury that has resulted into a medically induced coma. Reportedly his wife, Corinna Betsch, is hoping for her husband to make a recovery soon.

"Corinna is freaking out," said the source. "She's staying strong for the sake of the kids, but she's fearing the worst."

"We cannot predict the future for Michael Schumacher," said Grenoble University Hospital Center Chief anesthesiologist Jean-Francois Payen.

"He is in a critical state in terms of cerebral resuscitation... We can say that his condition is life-threatening, [but] for the moment, we cannot say what Michael Schumacher's future is," stated in a report by CBS News.

His family members remain by his side as he battles for survival. Hopefully Michael's record to rise above unfeasible hurdles will help him pound this awful wound. Schumacher, the most successful Formula One driver of in the history of racing, had endured many accidents before such as:

(1) He broke his leg in a crash at the Silverstone race course in 1999,

(2) He suffered serious neck and spine injuries after a motorcycle accident in 2009

Damon Hill, retired British racing driver, posted on Facebook: "We are all praying for Michael's speedy and full recovery and out thoughts are with Corinna and the children."

Martin Brundle posted on Facebook: "Michael's accident is distressing and a great shock, and we have to be very concerned about his chances of survival and return to full health. From what we are told it looks very serious indeed, and we can only hope for the best along with his lovely family. Michael loves to challenge race tracks on superbikes and he often excitedly shows his many amazing skydiving pictures on his phone. He's only a year out of the F1 cockpit but as a driven and competitive person you can't simply switch off and settle down at the end of a long career, you need challenges and achievements to keep the adrenalin flowing. But from what I read he wasn't taking undue risks on the ski slopes, and it seems he's been very unlucky on this one. It's not uncommon for racers to survive many big accidents to then be injured in cars, aviation, bikes, on water, or indeed ski slopes. The need for machinery and speed will always be there, it's inevitable. When I read that Michael had received a blow to the right side of his head I couldn't help but think of Ayrton, and pondered why these things so often happen to the truly great. I sincerely hope and expect of course that this incident has a much happier ending, and I feel sure that his competitive determination and fitness will give him the best chance."
