UPDATE: ‘The X Factor Australia’ Killer Tracks and Curveballs Recap: Dannii Minogue v Redfoo Over Reigan’s Outfit [VIDEOS]
“The X Factor Australia” contestants performed twice on Sunday’s Killer Tracks and Curveballs theme. There were a lot of screaming in the live show, but it’s from the judges, who couldn’t agree among themselves about the outfit of one contestant.
Now that there are only five contestants left in the show, the judges have unsheathed their claws. The four – Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Ronan Keating, Redfoo and Dannii Minogue – have engaged into a screaming match more than one time, and one of those times was just about a costume.
Dean Ray
Dean was first to get on the stage with his first song “Lonely Boy” by The Black Keys. As usual, he didn’t like his mentor Natalie’s song choice for him, but he was still game to do it. But unlike before, his dislike of the song was evident in his performance, according to Redfoo, to the utter shock of Natalie.
“I felt the track could have gone to 10, but it only went to eight,” Redfoo said. “It was good, but it wasn’t great.”
“I think it was a brilliant song choice for you. This is exactly what I see you singing,” Ronan agreed, “but yeah, maybe Foo is right. There’s something missing from your performance. I don’t know what that is … but there is definitely something.”
Natalie was flabbergasted with Foo and Ronan’s assessment, claiming she would tell Dean honestly if he wasn’t good.
“I think they [Ronan and Redfoo] are playing games because they want people not to vote for you,” Nat was adamant, but Dean himself accepted the guys’ views.
“It’s an opinion, and I’ll take it on board,” Dean graciously said.
His curveball song, “Crying” by Roy Orbison, was very well received by the judges. So much so, in fact, that he received a four-judge standing ovation, with Natalie and Dannii standing on the desk. He also brought tears to his mentor’s eyes.
Marlisa Punzalan
Ronan thought his charge would do well singing David Guetta and Sia’s “Titanium” in a key higher than the original, and he was right. The now-15-year-old schoolgirl even had her biggest judge critic, Dannii, standing up after her performance.
“Are you crazy?” Dannii asked Ronan for telling Marlisa to sing the track higher than Sia. “But it works!”
“It wasn’t good,” Redfoo, the only judge who didn’t stand up after Marlisa’s performance, told her before adding, “that was great.”
He continued, “And that was what I was talking about when I was talking about Dean’s performance. This was top notch. I’m very happy for you.”
Ronan admitted that while the first verse wasn’t delivered perfectly, the rest were splendid.
For Marlisa’s second song, the “curveball,” she sang the classic “Over the Rainbow.” And while her first note was wobbly, she quickly regained her balance and made a stunning recovery. However, this was the reason why Dannii didn’t stand up after her performance; she observed how Marlisa always seemingly stumble on her first notes.
“Had I thought that it was just tonight, I actually would have stood. I watched every rehearsal today, and it’s the same thing,” the Australian songstress said before admitting that she’s just being picky since it’s just a one-word error.
Reigan Derry
Fresh from being in the bottom two last week, Reigan was hoping to bounce back with votes this week. She confessed that if she doesn’t win the title, she wouldn’t know what else to do as she doesn’t have a backup plan.
Reigan isn’t new to success or even to reality show competitions. She was a finalist on “Australian Idol” in 2006, and had been a member of the pop duo Scarlett Belle until 2011. So she’s thinking the “X Factor” is now her last chance.
For her first song, her mentor Redfoo picked Radiohead’s “Creep” as her curveball track. According to the judges, though, it didn’t start off great. Ronan thought perhaps it was from her frustration from being in the bottom two last week that she had a rocky start.
Natalie didn’t like “Creep” for Reigan, saying it was “too aggressive” for her. Dannii thought that Reigan’s strapless, sweetheart neckline dress was contrary to her earlier objections of being overly sexualised. This had got Foo objecting, saying that it’s the whole package on her performance, not her dress.
Redfoo’s defence of the costume had got Dannii on the defensive as well, screaming her heart out to be heard. She wasn’t the only one screaming. Ronan had to chime in about how Dannii should critique Reigan’s performance, not her outfit, while Natalie repeated that she wasn’t a fan of the song choice.
“Look at what you’re wearing!” Redfoo told Dannii, perhaps feeling a little compelled to point out that Dannii’s dress was more provocative than Reigan’s. Dannii, however, pointed out that she wasn’t the one who objected to being sexualised in her career.
Dannii copped a lot of flak on Twitter after her criticism, and she cleared that up after Reigan sang her killer track, “Only Girl (In the World)” by Rihanna. She also called out Foo on claiming Reigan had a rough series, saying it was only one week that she has been on the bottom two and Foo was already making it sound much worse than it was.
Brothers 3
The boys’ first song was “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, and it had made Redfoo silent for a moment. The silence wasn’t a good one, though. Redfoo thought it was “bland.”
“But that song choice is very mellow, so you did your thing,” Redfoo conceded that perhaps it wasn’t the brothers’ fault that he found it weak. However, he was dismayed to learn that that was their “killer track” song.
“That was the killer track? That was their killer track? Oh no,” Foo said. “If that was your killer track, that’s not killing, that’s wounding.”
Natalie thought it was a perfect song for them, contradicting Redfoo and Ronan’s opinions that the “killer track” wasn’t right for them.
The brothers did better in their second song, though. Their curveball “Que Sera” by Justice Crew turned out to be their killer one.’
“Yeah, baby!” were Redfoo’s first words for the boys. “That is what I want to hear on your album because you Brothers 3’d that act … That’s what I like to hear.”
Caitlyn Shadbolt
At last, Ronan has given Caitlyn a country song for her killer track with Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.” After enduring weeks of not-so-positive critiques from the judges, Caitlyn has finally nailed it with the right song choice.
As Ronan told her during rehearsal, “If don’t shine brighter than you’ve ever shine in your performance, then you never will.”
She must have taken the pressure to heart because she was able to impress the judges. She also followed Ronan’s advice to let go of her cutesy style when singing the song. Not completely, though. There was still sweetness in her movements, but overall, she sang it with angry conviction, just as the song required.
Her gold pants and crop top got noticed by both Natalie and Dannii, who thought her outfit was “awesome.”
Her curveball song “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” was “flat,” though, at least only according to Redfoo. The other judges were convinced of Caitlyn’s performance, with Natalie even saying that was her best vocals yet, but Foo thought it wasn’t up to snuff.
