Before Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, there were the Wakefield twins in the 1980s.

The beloved "Sweet Valley High" books that captured hearts is now in the works to hit the big screen.

Writer and director Diablo Cody, best known for "Juno," her box office hit about a sarcastic, pregnant girl in high school, is now working on the movie adaptation of the popular young adult book series.

News first broke of the series getting its own film adaptation in 2009. Reports say Cody tracked down the rights to "Sweet Valley High" and has been planning to produce it ever since. It is currently still in development.

There has been no word on casting yet, but Cody assures everything is in the works.

"That is moving forward," says Cody in an interview by Indiewire.

"I need to talk to the producers and see how much I can say about it. It's closer to reality than ever but I can't freely talk about it." the writer adds.

The renowned writer expressed enthusiasm in transforming the book into something that she loved during the colorful '80s.

"I want it to be wonderfully nostalgic, I want it to be the '80s what American Graffiti was to the early '60s. I want it to be looking back on a really cool time and enjoying yourself and I want it to be glamorous and colorful and bubblegum and a feast for the senses. That's my plan," says Cody.

The book series was previously adapted for a television series with sisters Cynthia and Brittany Daniel at the helm.

Will this movie rival the "Twilight" and "Hunger Games" obsessions? Most probably. "Sweet Valley High" ruled bookshelves all over the world in 1983 and it won't come as a surprise if mothers and grandmothers even come and watch the epic movie on its much-awaited release.
