US Open 2015: Roger Federer books All-Swiss semifinal clash against Stan Wawrinka
Roger Federer moved into the final four round of the US Open to face Stan Wawrinka, setting up an All-Swiss battle at Flushing Meadows. Federer easily dispatched Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-3 6-3 6-1, retaining his untainted record of not dropping a single set in the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Federer will face fellow Swiss Wawrinka in the semifinal round of the US Open after both players made short work of their respective opponents in the quarterfinal round. Federer cruised past Frenchman Gasquet, while Wawrinka pummeled Kevin Anderson in the final set to complete a 6-4 6-4 6-0 victory on Thursday.
Federer, who has won 16 of 19 meetings with his compatriot Wawrinka, said he was excited to play his Davis Cup teammate in the last four stage of the tournament. "Stan played a wonderful match against me in Paris," Federer said, the BBC reported. "I couldn't be happier to play him here. It is cool for us to have two Swiss in the semi-finals."
The Swiss Maestro has the upper hand in his meetings with compatriot Wawrinka, winning 16 of 19 matches. The 17-time Grand Slam champion lost his most recent outing with Wawrinka in this year’s French Open quarterfinals 6-4 6-3 7-6(4), but the 30-year-old Wawrinka is well aware of Federer’s dominance and expects the crowd to be pulling for the world no. 2.
“Everybody loves Roger. He is the best player ever,” Wawrinka told Yahoo Sports.
Meanwhile, the other half of the US Open semifinal round will feature world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and defending champion Marin Cilic. Djokovic progressed into the final four round after defeating Spain’s Feliciano Lopez on Wednesday 6-1 3-6 6-3 7-6(2).
