Vagabond Diaries: Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca is World’s Leader of Top 50 Best Global Restaurants in 2013
Australia's Attica and Quay included in the list
Are you a rich or adventurous vagabond out to conquer the most delicious restaurant cuisines the world can offer? British magazine Restaurant has released its annual 50 best restaurants in the world, and for 2013, the top spot distinction has been given to Spain's El Celler de Can Roca.
Ran to perfection by the dashing brothers Josep, Jordi and Joan Roca, El Celler de Can Roca restaurant has actually been in the list for eight years now, but it is only this year that it landed on the magazine's top prime spot.
Serving mostly modern Spanish cuisine, the restaurant's bestsellers include charcoal-grilled king prawn, king-prawn sand, ink rocks, fried legs, head juice and king prawn essence.
On top 2 is Noma from Copenhagen, Denmark. A three-time world leader of Restaurant magazine's best 50 list before it surrendered to El Celler de Can Roca this year, Noma's style of food borders on seasonal, terroir-led Scandinavian. Its standout dishes include brown crab, egg yolk and herbs.
Osteria Francescana from Italy, Mugaritz from Spain and Eleven Madison Park from the United States completed the list at top 3, 4 and 5, respectively.
Only two Australian restaurants made it to this year's list of best 50 restaurants, new entrant Attica which landed on number 21 and Quay which decelerated from number 29 in 2012 to number 48 this year.
Other new entrants to this year's list include Restaurant Andre from Singapore, 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana as well as Mr & Mrs Bund from China, Piazza Duomo from Italy, Mani from Brazil, Septime from France and Central from Peru.
A re-entrant was Combal Zero from Italy.
On a per country basis, most of this year's 50 best restaurants came from the United States and France which cornered six slots each.
