Damon's death in "The Vampire Dairies: Season 5" finale is the most talked about event amongst the supernatural series fans. There were a plethora of fans who were quite disturbed by the death of Ian Somerhalder's character in the Season 5 finale.

Post Damon's death, Ian even took to Twitter to apologize to fans and acknowledge the fact that Damon has met his maker in "The Vampire Dairies: Season 5".

However, the engrossing series received five Entertainment Weekly.com awards for its shocking finale. The list of awards included, Most Rewound Moment, Most Unforgettable Line, and Best Use of Music for Damon's goodbye to Elena; and Best (Presumed) Death or Exit and Best Final Shot for Damon's mysterious disappearance with Bonnie.

In regards to receiving the award, the director of the series Chris Grismer gave his take on the last shot to EW.

"We just sort of over-exposed it, just old-school, and used smoke, and then I just had them grab the cameras and shake them. The weird thing about it was the actors couldn't hear each other because we had fans going and it was just pure chaos. So they kinda had to guess when it was their turn to talk, and then we dubbed their voices afterward."

The final shot of the series showed Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) fading away as they await their death.

Grismer further said that shooting Damon's final goodbye to Elena (Nina Dobrev) has its own challenges. Somerhalder was not in the frame when Dobrev bid farewell to Damon.

"To have her hair move [as though Damon was touching it], I had to have a green rod come in in the middle of the scene and move her hair, and she had to just keep in the moment, even though we were throwing all these curveballs at her," Grismer said about Nina's act in the "The Vampire Dairies" Season 5 Finale, adding, "She did a great job."

"The Vampire Dairies" Season 6 is reported to return in October this year and rumour has it that Ian Somerhalder may return in the new season.
