The penultimate episode of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 broke the hearts of thousands of fans as one major character met his end. With this death, Bonnie (Kat Graham) now feels the pressure of being the Anchor to the Other Side because everyone wants her to find the way that could bring back the dead.

Spoiler Alert: This feature contains major spoilers on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5, Episode 21 "Promised Land." At the Salvatore mansion, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tortured and interrogated a Passenger inhabiting the body of banker Mr Sykes to find out where the Travellers leader Markos (Raffi Barsoumian) is.

Mr Skyes told Damon that there is nothing that he could do to stop Markos from completing his plan on doppelgangers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev). Markos has Stefan and Elena locked and chained up while draining them of their blood.

However, a Traveller decided to go against Markos' plan and helped the doppelgangers escape. It turns out the Traveller was Maria (Tamara Austin), the wife of Julian inhabiting Tyler's (Michael Trevino) body.

Enzo (Michael Malarkey) is getting impatient because he is still stuck on the Other Side. Bonnie was asked to pick up the pace on working the spell that could fix the situation.

Liv (Penelope Mitchell) meets up with her brother Luke (Chris Brochu) to inform him that the coven is upset. Since he failed to hide the doppelgangers from the Travellers, Luke has no choice but to agree with the witches' plan of killing Stefan and Elena in order to maintain their magic which will be stripped away layer by layer if the Travellers succeed with their spell.

Damon asked Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R McQueen) to transfer the Travellers' bodies from the cave to the Salvatore mansion as part of his plan to draw in Markos. Bonnie felt the pressure again when Caroline (Candice Accola) revealed her plan of how to bring Tyler back. The Anchor finally told her friend the truth that there is no spell and everyone on the collapsing Other Side, including herself, will be gone for good.

Markos and Damon had a chat at the Salvatore mansion about the Travellers' plan of taking over Mystic Falls. Damon tried to use the element of surprise on Markos with Julian (Michael Trevino) tied up at the wine cellar but they failed.

The Travellers begin with their spell while Stefan, Elena and Maria arrive at the same time. Liv and Luke tried to kill a doppelganger but they failed since the Travellers' spell is already affecting their magical powers.

Enzo badgered Bonnie again regarding the way that could bring those on the Other Side back to life. Their conversation got interrupted when Maria, who died from Liv and Luke's attack, showed up to pass through Bonnie.

Meanwhile, Markos is succeeding with his plan as the TVD gang felt the effects of the Travellers' spell on magic. The Travellers leader declared that they should run and leave Mystic Falls in order for them to elude the spell.

Damon and Elena got reunited while the TVD gang prepared before leaving Mystic Falls. However, Bonnie has not arrived yet so Stefan and Caroline decided to stay and wait for their friend.

Enzo told Bonnie that their plan of keeping Maria, the one who could only help them, safe on the Other Side did not work because she vanished just like how Katherine (Nina Dobrev) and Vicki (Kayla Ewell) did. Meanwhile, Julian crossed paths with Stefan and Caroline and received the bad news about his wife's death.

Julian was really upset and Stefan tried to calm him down with Caroline sneaking up on Julian to snap his neck. However, Caroline failed as Julian used Tyler's hybrid powers to attack her.

In order to protect his friend, Stefan jumped in to save Caroline and a violent confrontation happened resulting to Stefan's death. Julian ripped out Stefan's heart killing the Salvatore vampire in front of Caroline. "There, dead doppelganger stops the spell," Julian stated before leaving the scene.

Stefan showed up before Bonnie to go to the Other Side and the Anchor could not believe that Stefan is dead. "Please, tell me that you've figured out a way to bring us all back," Stefan told Bonnie and the Anchor just apologized because she lost Maria.

The ending scene showed Stefan passing through Bonnie while Caroline cried over Stefan's dead body and screamed for help. Find out what happens next when "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 returns with the final Episode 22 titled "Home" on Thursday night, May 15, at 8 pm ET on the CW Network.
