40th Annual People's Choice Awards 2014 took place on Jan. 8, 2014 and the venue of the gala event was at the legendary Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The award ceremony honored those stars of Hollywood and TV who are the best in popular culture for the year 2013.

"The Vampire Diaries" star Nina Dobrev was dressed in gorgeous Jenny Peckham gown and was seated next to her ex beau Ian Somerhalder in the ceremony. The two won the award for the romance of their onscreen "TVD" character Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore. "We started dating in real life," Ian Somerhalder said on stage of People's Choice Awards 2014 while accepting the award for their chemistry in "The Vampire Diaries," as reported by US Weekly.

"And then we broke up in real life," Nina Dobrev replied.

"And yet our characters are still dating on the show," Ian continued.

"It's a good thing it's not awkward! It's a good thing we have chemistry!" said Nina Dobrev at the end, just when Ian Somerhalder planted a kiss on her cheek.

The couple broke up in May 2013 after dating each other for three years. Even after their break up they continue to be friends and co-stars. They are on good and friendly terms it showed on the stage of People's Choice Awards 2014. Nina Dobrev who turned 25 on Jan. 9 2014, also celebrated her birthday with her ex Ian Somerhalder.
