Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ Tops Triple J Hottest 100; Lorde’s ‘Royals’ At 2ND [VIDEO]
An Australian has once again claimed the top spot at the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100 list. Vance Joy dominated the chart with “Riptide,” while Kiwi sensation Lorde took the second spot with her international hit “Royals.”
Joy, whose real name is James Keogh, first released “Riptide” in 2013. Since his song was released in March, it was certified triple platinum by the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA), and has been featured in a U.S. TV advert.
“Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ is a first for the Hottest 100 in a couple of respects. We’ve never had a winning song from an artist who is so new that they’ve not even had an album to their name yet. It’s also the first #1 to have been written on a ukulele,” Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill said.
“After its first airing in March, the simple charm and endearing vulnerability of ‘Riptide’ stayed with listeners throughout the rest of 2013,” Kingsmill continued. “Now we wait excitedly for that album to arrive!”
Joy also has another entry in the list with “Play with Fire” at #95.
At second place is “Royals” by New Zealand international sensation Lorde. The 17-year-old rising music star also has “Tennis Court” and “Team” so high up in the list at #12 and #15 respectively.
“Get Lucky,” by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams, nabbed the third spot, while “Do I Wanna Know?” by Artic Monkeys and “Drop the Game” by Flume & Chet Faker round up the top 5.
Daft Punk is the only act that has four entries in the top 100. Lorde, Arctic Monkeys, London Grammar, Haim, and Chvrches are just some of the acts that have managed to slip in three songs, while Joy, Arcade Fire, Chet Faker, and Kanye West are among those with two songs.
The list, announced on Australia Day on Sunday, was determined by over 1.4 million votes cast by 173,658 Triple J radio station listeners from around the world. Voting was done from December 20 to January 20.
