Victim's Lawyer Seeks Saudi Prince’s DNA Sample to Reopen Rape Case
A Spanish court has reopened the case of a model who was allegedly raped by a Saudi prince in Ibiza, Spain in 2008 and the victim and her lawyer are asking the accused to provide his DNA sample to prove his innocence.
The 23-year-old model, whose name was withheld, and her lawyer, Javier Beloqui, wanted the DNA sample from 56-year-old Prince Alwaleed bin Talal so it could be matched with the DNA in the semen samples taken from her by investigators a day after she was allegedly drugged and then raped aboard a yacht.
"If he is innocent, it is all over and if not, he will be charged with rape. It is as simple as that," the model said, according to The Daily Mail.
The rape case was closed last year because of insufficient evidence. After an appeal by the victim, the judge of a provincial court of the
Balearic Islands overturned the ruling and an Ibiza court ordered the case reopened in July. The Ibiza court has asked the Saudi government to get a statement from the prince.
The prince, a nephew of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah and the world's 26th richest man, denied the allegations in a posting at his company's website on Wednesday.
"These allegations are completely and utterly false. The alleged encounter simply never happened. Indeed, the events could not have happened. Not only was Prince Alwaleed not in Ibiza at any time in 2008 but has not been in Ibiza for over a decade," said the message in the website of the Kingdom Holding Co. in Riyadh.
"Further HRH Prince Alwaleed's yacht, Kingdom 5KR was not in Ibiza in 2008 nor has Prince Alwaleed ever charted a yacht in Ibiza. The Prince does not vacation in Spanish waters as the story states. He was nowhere near Ibiza when the alleged events took place. As relevant travel records and itinerary confirm, he was in the presence of dozens of people at that time, including his family, and not in Spain," the statement added.
The prince only heard of the case on Tuesday. His staff, Heba Fatani, Senior Executive Manager for Corporate Communications, said an impersonator may have raped the victim instead.
