Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has added another feather to her cap. The fashion designer and former pop star has been appointed as the United Nations International Goodwill ambassador to help raise awareness about the AIDS virus and aid its victims. The United Nations made the announcement at a press conference in New York on Thursday.

The former pop diva missed the opening of her London store to be present in New York for the appointment. The 40-year-old made an impressive speech at the United Nations press conference in New York on Thursday, the same day when she was to open her flagship store in London. Her husband David Beckham was present at her store in her absence.

Getting appointed as the UN AIDS Goodwill Ambassador is an important journey in her life, said Victoria in the press conference, adding that being a "woman and a mother" meant she had to double the responsibility on her shoulders to spread awareness about AIDS.

The wife to footballer David Beckham said that she was honoured to be given a chance by United Nations to help women and children affected by this deadly disease. The mother to four kids will now have the objective to help the children around the world to be born without HIV. Victoria said will also ensure that the women who are affected by AIDS or HIV virus are given proper medical treatment.

Michel Sidibé, executive director of UNAIDS, revealed at the conference that he dreams of an AIDS-free world and believes that Victoria's contribution will help him come closer to his dream. He hoped that Victoria will make a difference to end AIDS epidemic by "her creativity, innovation and outreach." The former Posh Spice also talked about the time she visited Africa and Sub-Saharan countries to reach out to help women suffering from the HIV Virus.

"It's taken me getting to 40 years old to realize I have a responsibility as a woman, as a mother, I have a voice that people will listen to," she told the news conference adding that she is "not going to sit here and pretend" that she knows everything. The fashion designer said that she will take field trips to learn more about the HIV situation. Victoria, who is known for her stylish sense of dressing up, chose to wear a formal suit in midnight blue colour for the prestigious occasion.
