Bragging about sexual conquests serve as tickets for neophytes seeking to belong at HMAS Cerberus Victorian navy training facilities, which is located south of Melbourne, according to the lawyer of Royal Australia Navy sailor Keith Eric Calvert.

A jury from the Victorian County Court found the 24-year-old Calvert of two counts of sexual assault on January 23, 2009 at Crown Casino as prosecutors claimed that the defendant videotaped the incident in order to amuse his colleagues and, as his lawyer insisted, to win their approval.

"There was a culture of reporting, of bragging, of sexual exploits, that extended to revealing one's exploits by way of mobile phone footage," David Sexton, Calvert's barrister, was quoted by the Australian Associated Press (AAP) as saying on Monday.

In his testimonies during the earlier hearings, Calvert admitted that he had sex with the unidentified woman, reportedly a female Air Force cadet, but asserted that the encounter was entirely consensual.

Calvert added that his only fault was recording the act using his mobile phone, which he said he utilised in gaining the respect and acceptance of his peers during his training as a navy cadet

AAP said on its report that Calvert was caught gesturing his approval before the camera while filming the sexual act on his mobile phone but his lawyer argued that his client's action was motivated by his desire to win the approval of his navy mates.

Sexton also stressed that at the time of his client's candidacy as a navy cadet, the culture of "work hard, play hard" was being observed at the navy training base and Calvert succumbed into adapting that lifestyle if only to fit into the 'macho environment'.

The defense lawyer argued too that the filmed incident should be viewed as "an alcohol-fuelled product of the environment that he experienced ... and (prompted) by opportunistic rather than planned or premeditated (intents)."

Notwithstanding his pleas, the Victorian jury found Calvert guilty of two counts of rape but exonerated him from four additional counts of rape and one count of indecent assault.
