"Sherlock" actor Benedict Cumberbatch has admitted that he was initially apprehensive about the one-off Victorian special episode of “Sherlock,” adding that he came around when the creators pitched the idea to him.

In an interview with the Guardian, he said, “I thought they’d finally lost the plot, jumped the shark ... then they expanded the idea and pitched it to me properly and I think it’s fantastic. Absolutely brilliant.”

The setting of the special will be a big departure from the regular programming of the series. It will be the first broadcast of ‘Sherlock’ after its long hiatus of almost two years. Understandably, some of "Sherlock" fans also share Cumberbatch’s initial reaction.

Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes, said that he hopes that fans would not be disappointed. “We can’t disguise the fact that we’re often filming it in cities or public places where people are going to take snapshots of us dressed in Victorian kit. We haven’t disappointed fans in the past it seems so hopefully this won’t – I hope they enjoy it,” he said.

"The Abominable Bride," the one-off special episode of "Sherlock," is scheduled to air on Jan. 01 in the U.K. The official synopsis of the episode was recently released by BBC.

However, Cumberbatch, in his interview with the Guardian, was quick to downplay their popularity as the catalyst for the show’s success and gave credit to classic novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who is the original creator of "Sherlock Holmes."

In addition to BBC1 in the UK, "Sherlock" special episode will also air on PBS Masterpiece in the U.S. on Jan. 01, 2016. Various theatres around the world have also confirmed the broadcast of the special episode.
