Victoria’s Secret Model Lindsay Ellingson wears 3-D Printed Wings: Fashion Meets Technology at Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2013
Gorgeous models in lingerie at Victoria' Secret fashion show is an every-year affair, but this time, it was different. The gap between cutting-edge technology and glamour narrowed after model Lindsay Ellingson wore a pair of 3-D printed wings.
Lindsay Ellingson sported the costume at the fashion show on Tuesday night.
The wings have been Victoria's Secret's trademark and in the past they have crafted these wings out of all kinds of things like translucent plastics, crystals and more. But, Victoria's Secret partnered with Shapeways, a 3-D printing service to make the wings.
Shapeways scanned Lindsey's body with the help of a 3-D scanner and later printed them layer by layer with nylon plastic. Architect Bradley Rothenberg designed the wings for Lindsay using a computer algorithm that copies the shape of a snowflake.
After printing the wings, they were coated with millions of Swarovski crystals. Runway model Barbara Fialho (her measurement matches with Lindsay's) assisted the design team perfect the entire costume during fitting sessions.
Barbara who also walked the runaway at the VS fashion show mentioned that she wants technology to play a bigger role in the high-fashion industry. "It's great to see all these barriers being broken, new ideas, new ways to design. It's amazing," said Barbara.
"It's perfect because in fashion and jewelry, there are seasons -- every season there's something new, and with 3-D printing you can do something very new in a short period of time," said Scott. "Because everything's on demand ... with 3-D printing supply exactly meets demand," said Duann Scott (Shapeways designer evangelist), via CNN Money.
According to report on Wired.com, Shapeways have been instrumental in blending high-fashion and technology. They have crafted a 3-D printed gown for Dita Von Teese. Also, they have been selling 3-D printed bikinis on its website.
This collaboration of Victoria's Secret and Shapeways has created a new path for fashion and technology.
