With Marion Cotillard’s beauty and talent combined, it’s near impossible to take the spotlight away from her on the red carpet. But one person managed to do just that. Her publicist Bryna Rifkin, the very same person whose job is to let her shine, became the main story at the Toronto International Film Festival when she was caught on camera belittling a journalist.

The 52-second clip was uploaded by Catherine Beauchamp, the journalist at the receiving end of Rifkin’s rudeness, on YouTube earlier in September. In the video, Cotillard, who’s at the event for the premiere of her film “Blood Ties,” is seen talking to another journalist while Beauchamp is trying to slip in a question to her.

“She told us we could have one question,” the reporter told Rifkin when the latter said that she would take Cotillard inside immediately.

That’s when a smug-looking Rifkin started to rip her off.

“Nobody told you told,” she told Beauchamp in a condescending tone, complete with full haughty facial expression (i.e. scrunched nose, elevated eyebrows, and a snooty smirk). “And either way, I’m saying no.”

The video has since become viral, with viewers calling Rifkin the mean girl of publicists.

“The behaviour that we see on the video surprised and hurt me a lot. I didn’t understand why I was getting a reaction like that. I thought, maybe this publicist didn’t have a good coffee that morning. There are some gentle ways to say no,” Beauchamp, who runs the French-Canadian media outlet Le Tapis Rose de Catherine, told RadarOnline.com.

“I was looking for a few comments from Marion Cotillard about how much fun she has when she is shooting a movie. Marion is a beloved actress here in Quebec, so I thought it wouldbe special to get some comments from her in French.

“Her publicist allowed her to take several questions from my colleague, but when I politely asked for my turn, well, ou can see Bryna’s reply for yourself,” the reporter continued.

“Would she have said the same thing and use the same tone to a very popular entertainment TV show?”

She didn’t get to talk to Cotillard, though she said the film’s director, Guillaume Canet, who is also Cotillard’s boyfriend, was “super friend and very nice.”

Rifkin, ironically, is also the publicist for several other well-liked Hollywood stars such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ethan Hawke, and Jennifer Lawrence.
