Animals are considered as an extension of the family and owners have special love for their pets. Many pet owners love their pets in the same way they do to their children.

As autumn is fast approaching, pet owners bring their animals to be blessed every year. This ceremony is called The Blessings of Pets or The Blessings of Animals.

This tradition is held to commemorate St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures. During the time of St Francis he wrote a Canticle of the Creatures.

Animals of all shapes and sizes make their way to churches together with the pet owners for the 'Blessing of the Animals.'

This special ceremony brings together thousands of pets and pet owners who wish to have their pets looked upon by the higher being. These includes horses, rabbits, hamsters, snakes, birds, turtles, geckos, gerbils iguanas, fish, guinea pigs, ferrets, dogs and cats.

Normally, the Blessing of Pets is held outdoors. A prayer is offered to the animals and for all creatures, then the pets are gently sprinkled with holy water.

The blessing may end with a song such as "God from Whom All Blessings Flow" or "All Creatures of Our God and King."

Owners have shared that the blessing develops more loving behavior towards their pets. According to the report of some owners, certain physical healings also happen. One cat owner said that her cats don't get fleas as long as her pets are blessed each year.
