Libyan rebels claimed they have killed the country's ousted leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi on Thursday during a battle near his hometown Sirte.

Videos from the press are circulating to prove their claim. A video from Al Jazeera show a bloodied and lifeless Gaddafi lying on the ground amid commotion by rebels.

Another video from ABC News show a bloodied Gaddafi being mobbed by rebels.

Libya's interim government, the National Transition Council, announced the 69-year-old Gaddafi's death.

"We announce to the world that Muammar Gaddafi has been killed at the hands of the revolutionaries," NTC vice chairman Abdul Hafiz Ghoga told a news conference in Benghazi, according to Al Jazeera.

From the capital Tripoli, Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril also made the same announcement to the press.

"We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Moammar Gadhafi has been killed," Yahoo! News quoted Jibril as saying.

Rebels also captured Sirte on Thursday to gain full control of the country since starting the armed revolution in February.

Gaddafi was a 27-year-old captain when he led a bloodless coup that ousted King Idris from power. He then established an authoritarian regime.
