‘Vikings’ season 4 episode 20 spoilers: Showrunner talks about tensions between Bjorn, Ivar
“Vikings” season 4 episode 20 titled “The Reckoning” will observe tensions brewing between Ivar (Alex Hogh Andersen) and Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig). The struggle for power in the great army was shown in a couple of previous episodes as well. It seems that the same will continue not only in the finale episode but also in the next season, as showrunner Michael Hirst has revealed.
After Ragnar's (Travis Fimmel) death, all his sons united to avenge their father’s death. Ivar the Boneless and Bjorn the Ironside, who lived under the shadow of their parents so far, finally got the opportunity to take the lead and prove themselves as warriors. Both of them wanted to lead the troop in their own ways. However, Bjorn has claimed the power as of now, and apparently he will give orders until the time the great army exists.
Talking about tensions between the brothers in “Vikings” season 4 episode 20, Hirst said that it will “explode” in the show soon. “Bjorn is Ragnar's eldest son. Bjorn has had more experience in war. There are many tensions between the brothers, which will actually explode in time.
“But for the purposes of revenging their father's death, it's natural that Bjorn should lead them. And only Ivar of course objects to this b/c Ivar objects to everything,” he answered on Reddit (via Jomboy blog).
Previously as well, Hirst has stated that Bjorn and Ivar gradually become more famous than Ragnar. It remains to be seen how that will happen. Also, Ludwig has revealed that Bjorn and Ivar’s relationship is somewhat similar to that of Rollo (Clive Standen) and Ragnar – Bjorn being a true aggressive warrior like Rollo and Ivar being intelligent one like his father. Meanwhile, in “Vikings” season 4 episode 20, the great army will battle it out against Prince Aethelwulf (Moe Dunford) while King Ecbert (Linus Roache) will formulate his own plan. The latter will likely die but how that will happen remains a mystery that will be solved when the finale episode airs on TV.
Furthermore, it has been revealed that a new character Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) will be introduced in the last segment of the episode. The character will be of huge importance in the forthcoming season.
“He’s a man of Wessex, and he’s gonna come in as a worthy opponent to Ivar. His whole life is about deeply passionate commitments. He’s a wild card who happens to be [played by] Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who is himself kind of a wild card,” Hirst told Entertainment Weekly.
Moreover, speculations suggest that an important character (likely to be one of the Lothbrok brothers) of the show will also die in the finale episode. However, nothing can be said to be true as of now.
“Vikings” season 4 episode 20 will air on Feb. 1 at 9 p.m. ET in the US. The show also airs in Australia on SBS One at 8:30 p.m.
