‘Vikings’ season 5: Civil war ensues as Ivar and Lagertha face off
The “Vikings” season 5 release date has officially been set, and fans of the History show couldn’t be more excited. It will be the first season without Ragnar (Travis Fimmel), who will be succeeded by his sons, most notably Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen). But the Boneless’ pursuit of the crown and quest for revenge against Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) may turn the former king’s sons against each other.
Spoiler alert: This article contains plot details about the fifth season of “Vikings.” The new season premieres on November 29 in the US. Episodes from the series’ previous seasons are available for Australian viewers to watch on SBS.
History formally confirmed the epic return of “Vikings” at San Diego Comic-Con International with the release of the fifth season’s official trailer. Needless to say, the clip is action-packed and full of resentment. Ivar is gunning for his father’s former wife – the reigning queen – for killing his mother Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) and for the crown.
In the trailer, Ivar relishes on the fact that he is Ragnar’s son and that many people fear him. He’s showing no remorse towards his enemies, especially Lagertha, who apparently convinces the Boneless’ brother Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) to join her cause. The queen knows that Ivar is coming and is backed by Harald (Peter Franzén), who mentions that Lagertha’s years as the ruler of Kattegat are numbered.
“There is going to be a war – a war between brothers,” Ivar says. “A war that will make me the king of Kattegat.”
Björn (Alexander Ludwig), meanwhile, believes that his mother and his half-brother’s civil war “can only bring tragedy.” But when the two sides meet at the battlefront, Ivar, with Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) at his side, tells Ubbe that he can never forgive Lagertha for killing Aslaug and that he – “of course” – is going to kill her, to which the queen says, “You can try.”
An epic battle that features chopped heads and smashed faces follows. Ivar seems to enjoy the atmosphere of war as shots of him and his evil smile are all over the place. Ragnar’s son is also set to face the warrior bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) when he tries to invade York, which leads to a rainy warfare. Unfortunately for Ivar, things won’t bode well for him, according to series creator Michael Hirst (see related story below).
Word has it that “Vikings” season 5 will be Lagertha’s last hurrah. Fans (and even the Seer) have been speculating about the queen’s likely demise next season, which will allow the show’s younger characters to flourish. Stay connected with IBTimes Australia for more “Vikings” updates.
