‘Vikings’ season 5: Lagertha has a new shieldmaiden; Astrid missing
Lagertha doesn’t intend to cut her reign short, but she is bound to face enormous challenges on “Vikings” season 5. Harald is coming for her, and she needs to surround herself with loyal and trustworthy supporters in order to keep her monarchy. Based on the upcoming season’s preview, there’s a slight change in Lagertha’s personnel and it’s going to be interesting to see how the shuffling turns out.

It looks like Lagertha has tweaked her shieldmaiden crew and appears to be more confident than ever with her new squadron. In the “Vikings” season 5 teaser, the queen is joined by none other than Margrethe, who has apparently made her way to the top after starting at the lowest of lows. From here on out, Ubbe’s wife will help protect Lagertha’s rule over Kattegat, without having to worry about Ivar the Boneless hurting her for exposing his inability to satisfy women in bed.
Margrethe was one of Queen Aslaug’s slaves in Kattegat before she became the shared lover of Ubbe, Hvitserk and Sigurd. She is bothered by Ivar and is petrified of him, especially after he strangled and almost killed her. When Margrethe was later freed, she married Ubbe, but remains as Hvitserk’s lover with Ubbe’s permission.
Joining Margrethe as Lagertha’s shieldmaiden is the former second spouse of Earl Borg, Torvi, who was presumed to be dead following Egil’s attack. She is definitely alive and she looks just as tough before her torture in the “Vikings” season 5 preview. Torvi is second-in-command to Lagertha following her help in dethroning Kattegat’s former queen, Aslaug.
One thing that is noticeable, though, is the absence of Astrid, Lagertha’s lover. Her lack of presence alongside the queen is interesting. She is seen only once throughout the sneak peek video – by herself, looking serious and almost paranoid – while the crowd around her applauds and celebrates.
It remains to be seen if Astrid is still with Lagertha. After all, Astrid’s involvement with Björn is reason enough for the queen to send her away. But then again, this is the Viking world, where polygamy is nothing to be shocked about.
