This is not the first time that dogs were caught on video doing activities with children. Denver, dubbed as the “Guilty Dog” for example, is popular on YouTube for eating Cat food while his owner was away. There are other funny dog videos that are available online.
While there are funny dogs, there are also the heroic ones. Here are two of them:
Rags
Rags the Terrier followed his master to the frontline during the Second World War even if he left him elsewhere for his safety. Since the American soldier who owned rags realised that the dog had a knack for finding his way, he commissioned Rags to send messages from the frontline to the command centre. Later on, his sense of hearing also became of use to the soldiers in the trenches. Rags heard a certain sound before a bomb hit the trenches so whenever he’d run, the soldiers would follow.
In 1918, Rags delivered another message amidst a gas attack by the Germans. The dog was undeterred and delivered the message. He died later on when he turned 20, years after the war.
Sallie, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry
Owned by a captain of one Union regiment, Sallie grew up among soldiers while they were preparing themselves for the Civil War. When it was time to fight, the bull terrier was in every battle. Sallie reportedly ran to the frontline every time there was a battle and barked at the enemy. Aside from her fear-mongering, the dog stood vigil over Union soldiers who were wounded.
It was during the 1865 attack when Sallie died. The Union paused the operation to bury the dog, they were under heavy fire.
