Virgin America Creates Catchy In-Flight Safety Music Video [VIDEO]
Virgin America sure knows how to make people pay attention. The U.S. airline has released its new in-flight safety video that doubles as a fun and catchy music video, featuring former “American Idol” hopeful Todrick Hall.
The new “VX Safety Dance” video puts a new spin on the usual boring in-flight safety ads of airlines. The airline enlisted the help of “Step Up 2” director Jon M. Chu, lead choreographers Jamal Sims and Christopher Scott, dancer Madd Chadd, and “So You Think You Can Dance” alums Cyrus Spencer, Sasha Mallory, Phillip Chbeeb, and Marko Germar.
Hall created the music and lyrics for the video.
Complete with amazing choreography, contortionist passengers, a dancing nun, break dancers, and rapping little girl, the five-minute clip has already amassed over a million views since it was uploaded on YouTube on Tuesday.
“The most important aspect of any safety video is that people actually pay attention to it. Too often the dry, perfunctory safety messaging used in eh past was tuned out,” Virgin America Chief Operating Officer Steve Forte said in a statement.
“We believe we have an obligation to create safety messaging that is not only accurate, but that holds the attention of everyone onboard – from the eight-year-old travelling with his parents on up.”
The new music safety video will be shown in all Virgin America flights starting November.
And for those who are captivated by the sheer exuberance beat and slick dance moves in the video, they are given the opportunity to join the future in-flight safety video production by submitting their own freestyle #VXsafetydance” moves via Instagram.
Chu and choreographer judges will review the top-voted videos, with the chosen winning entry be given a spot in the future version of the airline’s official safety video in 2014.
“Virgin America’s first safety video is probably the only one that I’ve ever paid attention to when flying – I’m a visual learner myself and making it fun and entertaining made a big difference for me,” Chu said.
“Virgin America fans like me choose this airline because it has a really unique and fun flying experience, so I wanted to make sure this video lived up to that promise and pushed the envelope. I think we’ve successfully taken Virgin America into new, uncharted territory with this safety video, and I really hope to see people doing their own versions of the safety dance soon.”
