Virgin suspends Darwin flights due to cyclone Carlos
Virgin Blue Group (ASX: VBA) has suspended flights in or out of Darwin tonight and tomorrow, following advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and the closure of Darwin Airport due to tropical cyclone Carlos.
"The Darwin International Airport management team has this morning made a collective decision to keep Darwin Airport closed to passenger travel," a statement from NT emergency services said on Wednesday.
Virgin said its 16 February DJ1437 Perth-Darwin, DJ1464 Darwin-Melbourne and DJ459 Brisbane – Darwin flights have been affected, as well as 17 February DJ1457 Melbourne-Darwin, DJ446 Darwin-Brisbane and DJ1464 Darwin-Melbourne flights.
“Guests should note that the Darwin Airport Terminal is closed so please do not make your way to the terminal,” the airline said.
“Our Guest Contact Centre is currently contacting guests booked on these flights to organise alternate travel arrangements once the airport is re-opened.”
Virgin said guests booked to travel up to and including Friday 18 February, 2011 to/from Darwin who need to alter their flight plans as a result of the severe weather and closure of Darwin Airport can receive free of charge move to another service for travel no later than 5 April 2011. The can also avail of free of charge move to alternative destination or re-routing in order for travellers to reach their final destination no later than 5 April 2011, and free of charge cancellation with full credit.
