After a soft launch with existing customers in June, Vodafone Australia is expanding its reach with its 4G mobile network to new customers starting Wednesday, July 10.

On June 12, the telecom activated its 4G long-term evolution (LTE) services for their existing customers with 4G devices in a few parts of the country, including Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Newcastle, and Wollongong.

After the soft launch, Vodafone has now opened its doors to new customers, offering 10 4G-enabled phones, namely Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy SIII 4G, Samsung Galaxy Express, Samsung Galaxy Note II, HTC One, HTC One SV, Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia SP, Windows 8X by HTC, and Nokia Lumia 820.

According to ZDNet, the company doesn't currently have plans for 4G dongles, however.

"Our current advantage is our spectrum. Put simply, the wider the radio channel, the fatter the pipe, which translates into faster data speeds for customers," Vodafone's chief network officer Benoit Hanssen said in a statement.

The telecom has invested over $1 billion to overhaul its 3G network after losing 1.5 million customers in the last three years. And although the company's effort came two years after rival Telstra began rolling out similar technology, it claims that users can obtain faster broadband speed on its network.

It claims its "spectrum advantage" in the 1800MHz band for its 4G network is its main advantage over competitors. It currently has access to 2x20MHz of continued spectrum.

"Vodafone is currently the only carrier that has this spectrum band in all five major mainland state capital cities."

Mr Hanssen added, "With average speeds 15 times faster than 3G speeds, not only is Vodafone 4F fast, it is reliable, and from today it can be your network if you live or work in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, as well as major regional centres of Wollongong, Gold Coast, and Newcastle.

"The great news is that our coverage footprint is literally expanding every week and by the end of the year we plan to triple the number of 4G network sites."

Vodafone is the country's third largest mobile carriers, behind Telstra and Optus.
