‘The Voice’ star Christina Grimmie shot dead, gunman identified as Kevin James Loibl

During a meet and greet with her fans, Christina Grimmie was fatally shot in Orlando, Florida on Friday night.

After seeing the unknown man shoot, Grimmie’s brother immediately tackled him. During the struggle, the man, now known as Kevin James Loibl, shot himself. When the police arrived rising star Grimmie was critical and Loibl was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to NBC News, local police officers are still investigating and trying to understand Loibl’s motivation and intent on killing Grimmie. Orlando Police Chief John Mina said that despite their scouring for information, they found no connection between Loibl and Grimmie.

“The suspect travelled to Orlando apparently to commit this crime and then had plans to travel back to where he came from,” Mina told the reporters.

The most probable theory regarding Grimmie’s death is the Loibl was a deranged fan.

Grimmie’s brother Marcus was praised by the police for his immediate reaction that “could have prevented further loss of life” and injuries to innocent people.

ABC News reports that 27-year old Loibl was carrying two handguns and one hunting knife. Loibl came from St. Petersburg, Florida. The Plaza Live, where the shooting happened, was not equipped with metal detectors. Guards would only search the 120 people who have tickets to go in.

St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman Rick Shaw said that there was nothing about Loibl that could have led him to commit murder. He was never arrested. His record is only composed of petty theft, a battery accident and a car accident.

After the struggle in the concert venue, Grimmie was immediately transported to a local hospital where she died because of her critical injuries.

“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord,” Grimmie’s publicist Heather Weiss said, as reported by The Guardian. “We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.”

Fans and mentors turn to social media to express their grief. Some of them remember Grimmie by reminiscing what she had done in “The Voice” especially her blind audition where she sang a Goosebumps -worthy rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.” Grimmie was 22 years old and loved by many.
