WA Fatal Crash Kills Driver in Flames, Witness Tells of Rescue Attempt
A man died in flames Tuesday after his car crashed on a road train. A witness tried to pull the victim from the burning car, but his fire extinguishers were not enough for the blaze.
The tragic crash happened on the Brand Highway at Cape Burney about 6:00pm local time. Police officers have yet to release the cause of the accident.
The 52-year-old driver was alone in his car when the accident happened. The truck driver had been cut from the wreckage and taken to hospital, reports ABC. No other victims were reported.
The road train carried mineral sands, which had escaped its container during the crash. Authorities closed the Brand Highway for several hours to clean up.
Desperate rescue attempt
Witness Kalam White had seen the accident and tried to rescue the driver who died. He tried to pull him from his burning car.
He told ABC that he saw the flames on the other side of the truck and the burning car.
"I noticed there was someone in there and run back to my truck and got the fire extinguisher, grabbed the other one off the prime mover as well in the accident and a couple [of] other fire extinguishers," Mr White narrated.
Mr White then went back to the car to try to put out the flames, but he was unable to do so.
"(I) tried to put it out but just couldn't," he said.
