Daryl (Norman Reedus) is in deep trouble as Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) takes him to The Sanctuary, home of the Saviors, while Dwight (Austin Amelio) pursues a runaway member of the group on “The Walking Dead” season 7, episode 3 (Walking Dead 7x03).
Spoiler alert: This recap contains plot details about season 7 of “The Walking Dead.” The seventh season premiered Oct. 20. The series is available for Australian viewers to watch on Foxtel every Monday, 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm.
The episode begins with Dwight taunting a number of survivors for a sandwich. Slaves are then seen wrangling walkers out in the dump. Daryl, meanwhile, is locked in a lightless cell and undergoes a series of torments. He is isolated and forced to listen to the same song over and over again.
Daryl is then taken by Dwight to the community doctor's clinic where they cross paths with Sherry (Christine Evangelista), Dwight's ex-wife. She mentions about something being “negative,” which may indicate pregnancy matters. Dwight returns Daryl to his cell and tells him that he will eventually submit to Negan.
Negan offers Dwight a woman of his choice as a reward for taming Daryl. Dwight refuses the offer, saying he isn’t done with Daryl yet. Dwight heads out after receiving a radio call about a runaway.
Daryl escapes out of his cell after a Savior forgets to lock it up. He runs into Sherry, and she tells him to get back into his cell before things get worse for him. He makes a run for it anyway before running into a number of Saviors.
Negan arrives and asserts his dominance. He asks the Saviors who they were and they all respond “Negan.” He tells Daryl that he could either kill him, work him up so bad that he’d wish he was dead or live luxuriously under him. Negan then fakes Daryl with his bat, Lucille, but Daryl never flinches. “You don’t scare easy,” says a smiling Negan. The leader of the Saviors leaves while his members beat Daryl up.
Dwight catches up to the runaway Savior, Gordon (Michael Scialabba). Dwight commands him to go back to The Sanctuary, but Gordon refuses and tells Dwight that Negan is due to face an uprising and will fall eventually. Dwight, now uncertain about the situation, shoots Gordon anyway.
Back at the compound, Dwight and Sherry smoke cigarettes together. Sherry, who is now Negan’s wife, tells Dwight that her new husband is treating her well. Although neither of them is satisfied with what has happened, they both agree that it’s better than being dead. Dwight then visits Daryl, throws his sandwich at him and puts up a picture of Glenn’s corpse in the cell wall, further tormenting his hostage.
The following day, Daryl is taken to Negan. The Saviors’ leader tells Daryl about Dwight and Sherry’s story. The couple previously fled The Sanctuary but was eventually caught by Negan. Sherry ultimately agreed to marry Negan in order to spare Dwight. But Dwight still had to pay and got half of his face ironed.
Negan tells Daryl that he’d also take him under his wing if he answers the question “Who are you?” correctly. Daryl answers his own name and he is sent back to his cell. The episode ends with Dwight heading out and seeing the undead runaway he shot previously.
