AMC is in the process of developing a spinoff of one of its biggest hits, "The Walking Dead."

On Monday, AMC announced that the companion series is in its early stages of development, scheduled to launch in 2015.

"Walking Dead" comics creator Robert Kirkman and executive producers Dave Alpert and Gale Anne Hurd are behind the new series, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The spinoff is set to tell a new tale and feature new characters and cast based on Kirkman's comics. With the new series, AMC has tied up with the hit comic series for the third time. Apart from "The Walking Dead," a show called "The Talking Dead" hosted by Chris Hardwick is there on AMC.

"Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer," Charlie Collier, AMC president and GM said.

"We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It's a big world and we can't wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse," he added.

"After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of "The Walking Dead" universe," Kirkman said on the latest developments.

"The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing," he added.

"The Walking Dead" has been a smash-hit show for AMC in terms of total viewers. The third season finale of the series broke its own records which is commendable.

Season 4 of "The Walking Dead" hit the airwaves Oct. 13.
