Wall Street Journal Fashion Editor Disses Kardashian Kollection As Tacky And Cheap In New Book
A new book by Wall Street Journal fashion editor Teri Agins has been released titled "Hijacking The Runway: How Celebrities Are Stealing The Spotlight From Fashion Designers." While the book tackles many topics in the fashion and showbiz industry, one notable point that Agins made in the book is a major diss on Kim Kardashian and her family's fashion line, the Kardashian Kollection.
In the book, Agins describes the collection as "tacky, cheap and ridiculous." In an account from a shop visit to a Sears Department store in New York, which was one of the locations to first carry the Kardashian Kollection label, Agins didn't hold back with her criticism. ""Even if it had been for a Halloween costume, I would have rejected it as too tacky," she said.
She also elaborated on how Kim and her family have hijacked the runway, giving reference to a show where Kendall Jenner, Kim's younger sister, walked the runway. In that show, Kim and her husband Kanye West were in the front row and one of Kanye's songs was on the soundtrack. She called the family's presence ridiculous.
Kim has also worked as a celebrity stylist in the past and Kanye now fancies himself as a fashion designer and stylist. Kanye even started styling Kim ever since they first started going out. The book doesn't warm up to Kanye's journey as a fashion designer, and according to a review by the Independent, Agins ridicules Kanye's attempts at becoming a credible and bonafide designer by showing his collection at Paris Fashion Week back in 2012.
Kim and her sisters Kourtney and Khloe have been designing the fashion line, which they named the "Kardashian Kollection" for the past several years. The line offers apparel, shoes bags, accessories and has now expanded into beauty products, a hair care line as well hosiery and other related merchandise. The sisters also run several branches of their own retail store called DASH. Other members of the family have also ventured into the fashion scene. Their brother Robert Kardashian started a signature sock line named Arthur George while Kendall and Kylie Jenner have also had their own collections released through collaborations with brands like Steve Madden and PacSun.
The book tackles the way celebrities have "hijacked" the fashion scene with the likes of the Olsen Twins and Victoria Beckham transitioning into serious designers. Others like Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez walk the line between their careers as entertainers and fashion icons and designers. The author spent 25 years with The Wall Street Journal writing about the industry and the book is her account on the evolution of the industry with celebrities transitioning into designers and the designers turning into celebrities themselves.
