The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes Speaks out against Cyberbullying; Reveals Receiving Death Threats Following One Direction Feud
The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes has decided to speak out against cyber bullying, sharing his own experience receiving death threats following the One Direction feud.
It’s not cool to “hide behind one’s computer screen,” he says, reiterating that it is not right to make other people unsafe and not secure. Speaking to The Metro, the English band member, he emphasised that he is coming out to help those being bullied online.
"I'm in a position where I've seen hate from people who maybe don't like the band,” Nathan was quoted as telling The Metro, according to Entertainmentwise.com.
Sharing his own experience, Nathan recalls the death threats he had received online stemming from the ongoing feud with British band One Direction and how he had felt a lot of hates since it all began.
It’s an open secret that The Wanted has a love-hate relationship with One Direction, touted as the group’s top rival. They both came to the states almost at the same time in 2012, thus the birth of the misunderstanding and online spats on social media, particularly Twitter.
He admitted being confused amidst all the chatters and hates.
"When the One Direction argument, or whatever it was, was going on between a few of the boys, for no reason I was suddenly getting death threats and stuff off young girls and I was quite confused by that," he said.
The confusion is coming from the fact that haters have associated him with the rival band and he felt uneasy that people could not tell him the hate in his face.
Nathan noted, "I didn't know what I'd done but then realised they associated me with the band. But the way they say things - the fact people can hide behind a computer screen, they'd never say it to your face. They have that power, almost, of hiding behind a computer so they can be more expressive and a lot nastier."
And how one should deal with it?
He said, "you can block these people, you can remove them from your timeline, you can unfollow them. You don't have to be 'friends' with these people and you can ignore them. " is the best way of dealing with it. And also speak to your friends and keep on interacting with your friends as much as possible and that will make you feel a lot better."
Nathan and The Wanted group are currently busy promoting their single, We Own The Night, one of the songs in their new album Word of Mouth which is set to be released on Sept 17, 2013.
