Ward's AutoWorld Magazine has just named its 2014 10 Best Automobile Engines including the Audi S5, the BMS 535d and the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Ward's 10 Best Engines is an annual list of the ten best automobile engines available in the U.S. automobile market that are available in regular-production vehicles and are on sale in the U.S. no later than the first quarter of the year.   2. BMW 535d (3.0L Turbodiesel DOHC I-6)
  3. Ram 1500 EcoDiesel (3.0L Turbodiesel DOHC V-6)
  4. Fiat 500e (83-kW Electric Motor)
  5. Ford Fiesta (1.0L EcoBoost DOHC I-3)
  6. Chevrolet Cruze Diesel (2.0L Turbodiesel DOHC I-4)
  7. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (6.2L OHV V-8)
  8. Honda Accord (3.5L SOHC V-6)
  9. Porsche Cayman (2.7L DOHC H-6 boxer)
  10. Volkswagen Jetta (1.8L Turbocharged DOHC I-4)

The Ward's 10 Best Engines list started in 1994 for Model Year 1995. It has continued the list annually and it is published at the end of the preceding year. Aside from the criteria of automobile engines to be included in the prestigious list, another measure to be eligible for Ward's 10 Best Engines list is that the automobile must have a base price of no more than US$60,000 for the 2014 list. In 1995, the base price limit of the vehicles must only be US$50,000.

Ward's AutoWorld Magazine editors evaluated several engines during a 2-month testing period according to everyday driving situations. It tested the engines based on its noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels, power and torque output, technical relevance and basic comparative numbers.

Most of the winners have fuel efficient engines, with eight of them having direct fuel injection and six having utilized forced induction. Ward's 10 Best Engines list included three diesel engines, an electric motor and a three-cylinder petrol engine.

The Audi S5 3.0L TFSI Supercharged DOHC V-6 engine, which was included in previous lists, is still a strong contender because it made the 2014 list again and has claimed its fifth consecutive award!

The Honda Accord 3.5L SOHC V-6 engine was also recognized by Ward for the fifth time since it was first included in their list of best engines in 2005.

Ward's AutoWorld Magazine 2014 10 Best Automobile Engines nominees that didn't make the cut were General Motors' (GM) 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel engine, the Cadillac CTS Vsport powered by 430-hp 3.6L twin-turbo V-8 engine and the Dodge Dart GT with a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir 4-cylinder engine.
