Doctors made what we call 'the best use of social media' siteTwitter. Ray who is the mother of two small kids considered the nerve-racking operation, where both breasts are removed, necessary given her family history of breast cancer and after testing positive to the BRCA gene.

Doctors Minas Chrysopoulo and Steven Pisano of PRMA Plastic Surgery who are experts in advanced breast reconstruction after breast cancer, teamed up for Ray's surgery.

All the steps of double mastectomy surgery were described on Twitter, most of them with breath-taking images along with facts about the cancer-causing BRCA mutation and DIEP flap(the type of breast reconstruction Ray had underwent).

One of the first tweets showed a image of Ray before operation, discussing "her decision to have a mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer by 98 per cent."

Ray's mother unfortunately died of breast cancer, and she later discovered she had a very high risk of developing it herself and then decide to go for surgery and travelled all the way from Arizona to Methodist Hospital for this porpose.

Chrysopoulo said Ray done thorough research on her options and decided to 'take the bull by the horns' and undergo the preventative procedure, thinking of her family. The doctor commended her for allowing her surgery to be live-tweeted.

Ray opted for a double mastectomy "because her risk is very high and her mother died of breast cancer," said Joann King Methodist's director of public relations.

'It was very brave of her,' 'and can prove helpful to other women who are trying to make a decision' He told mysanantonio.com. The mastectomy started at 9 a.m. and was over by noon. The reconstruction was completed by 5 p.m.

'She's in good condition,' hospital spokesman Joann King told mysanantonio.com 'We're listening to Muse on Pandora today in the OR. One of the physicians favorites!' they tweeted.
