Rafael Nadal is aiming for number one in the ATP world rankings at the end of year, and his performance at the 2013 China Open will have a lot to say in his mission to finish at the top of the heap in 2013. On Wednesday afternoon, he faces Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round of the tournament held in Beijing, China.

The 27-year-old from Spain last won the championship in this Chinese city way back in 2005. Nadal’s road back to prominence started February 2013 after suffering from an injury-plagued 2012 season. Nadal now has a 62-3 win-loss card from that point with 10 titles including majors 2013 U.S. Open and 2013 French Open.

Nadal defeated qualifier Santiago Giraldo of Colombia in the first round of, 6-2, 6-4 and will face Kohlschreiber, who had trouble beating Spaniard Albert Montanes, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (4) in his opening match.

The 29-year-old German has a winning record of 27-20 in 2013 but has yet to win a title in the current ATP season. He came close to winning titles thrice in Stuttgart and Munich in his home country and another in Auckland, New Zealand, but fell short every time.

Not surprisingly, Nadal has the edge in all-time head-to-head match-up with Kohlscherbeiber, 10-1. The last two happened in 2013, both in the Round of 16 -- first, at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo in Spain and second at the U.S. Open.

The German's lone win over the Spaniard came in 2012 in the quarterfinals of the Gary Weber Open in Halle, Germany.

This is the 15th edition of the China Open. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic won the last three titles (2012, 2010 and 2009) and Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych won in 2011.

In other matches involving top-seeded players, Djokovic beat Lukas Rosol, 6-0, 6-3 and will take on Fernando Verdasco in the next round; David Ferrer beat Vasek Pospisil, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6; and Berdych advanced with a win over Pablo Andujar-Alba, 6-4, 6-1.
