Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova and China’s Li Na rode the first bus to the quarterfinals. Six other players will join them after Thursday night as six more Round of 16 matches are on tap in the women’s singles competition of the 2013 China Open.

The tournament held in Beijing, China is an ATP 500 category tourney with a prize pool of $2,315,250.

Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world number one Serena Williams will be aim for a quarterfinals seat and her eight straight career win over Maria Kirilenko.

Williams defeated Elena Vesnina, 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round and Francesca Schiavone, 6-4, 7-5 in the next round. Meanwhile, Kirilenko won her opener against Jie Zheng, 7-5, 6-2 and ousted Urszula Radwanska, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) in the Round of 32.

In their head-to-head match-ups, the American has dominated the Russian winning seven times in seven outings since 2004. The last two happened in 2013; in the Round of 16 of the Australian Open where Williams won, 6-2, 6-0; and in a tourney in Madrid, Spain to the tune of 6-3, 6-1.

In what is the marquee match-up in the Round of 16 in the distaff side of the 2013 China Open, 11th seed Sloane Stephens of the United States of America faces 6th seed Carol Wozniacki from Denmark.

The 20-year-old American has yet to win vs. Wozniacki in two outings but is having a career year thus far with a semifinals appearance at the Australian Open and a quarterfinals stint at the Wimbledon Championships.

Wozniacki is ranked 8th in the WTA world rankings but Stephens is not far behind at 13th place.

The winner of the Stephens-Wozniacki match-up will battle either Williams or Kirilenko in the quarterfinals.
