Gael Monfils is the latest toast of the tournament after defeating the highly-favored and popular Roger Federer in the Round of 16 of the 2013 Shangai Masters APT event at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center in the Minhang Disctrict in Shanghai, China.

Monfils won in three hard-earned sets, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, against the former world number one.

“When you go on the court, you just stick to your plan and just, okay, I’m going to challenge him,” said Monfils in a quote from the official Shanghai Masters website. “Then if you see the way, you took it.”

The Frenchman will need the same level of confidence when he battles top seed and world number two Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

Monfils has never won in eight career meetings with the Serbian. Then again, he was also the heavy underdog against Federer in the Round of 16 match— having a record of 1-6 in seven head-to-head match-ups before the upset in China.

Djokovic beat Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarters.

In another Round of 16 match, Rafael Nadal won over Carlos Berlocq, 6-1, 7-6(5), to set-up a date in the last eight with Stanislas Wawrinka, a winner over Milos Raonic.

The head-to-head record between the 27-year-old Spaniard and the 28-year-old Swiss has been brutally one-sided to say the least. Nadal has won every match against Wawrinka and holds a dominating 10-0 record against him.

The two most recent match-ups happened in 2013 at the Roland Garros (6-2, 6-3, 6-1) and the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Madrid, Spain (6-2, 6-4).

The story of domination does not end there: Wawrinka has yet to win a set against Nadal in 22 sets played in those 10 matches.
