Roger Federer tries to advance to his first final four appearance since July 2013—a long time for the former world number one—as he takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Swiss Open.

Federer’s performance thus far has provided a bit of hope that he can still recover from a tough ATP season. He beat Adrian Mannarino in the Round-of-32, 6-4, 6-2 and Denis Istomin in the Round-of-16, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Dimitrov of Bulgaria has only played 156 matches in his career with 82 wins and 74 losses. To compare, the 32-year-old Federer has 211 career losses—more than the total matches of Dimitrov’s career— and 914 wins.

Federer and Dimitrov have never played each other at an ATP World Tour, Grand Slam or Davis Cup main draw event.

To advance to the quarters, the Bulgarian opened with a win over Radek Stepanek in the first round, 6-3, 6-3 and followed it up with a victory against Alexandr Dolgopolov, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.

If the Swiss legend goes on to win the title in Basel, Federer will qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals set from Nov 4 to 11, 2013.

Meanwhile, top-seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Marcos Baghdatis to reach the quarters. The Argentine will face Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, who defeated compatriot Michael Llodra, 6-4, 6-3.
