The Philippines beat an upset-minded Hungary team in the quarterfinals while Chinese Taipei pulled off the rug under hosts England A to set-up one half of the semifinals of the 2013 World Cup of Pool in East London.

At stake in this semifinal match is a seat to the title game in this tournament with a $60,000 prize purse for the champion. Finland meets Holland in the other semifinal match also set Sunday.

The Philippines’ Lee Van Corteza and Dennis Orcollo made sure there won’t be an surprise in their match against Hungary as the two-time World Cup champions made mincemeat of the Hungarian pair of Miko Balazs and Gabor Solymosi with a final score of 9-1 for the Filipinos.

Hungary though can call this tournament a relative success. They qualified to the main event via the backdoor through a European qualifying event in August 2012 and then became known as the giant-slayers in this World Cup with wins over 3rd seed China and 14th seed Russia in the first two rounds.

In the semifinals, the Philippines will meet Asian rivals Taiwan (Chang Jung-lin and Ko Pin-yi), which beat hosts and 2nd seed England A (Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes), 9-3 in the their QF match Saturday.

The Taiwanese pair was never in real trouble against Appleton and Boyes. They raced to a 6-1 lead, then at 7-2 and finished the match at 9-3. England A could not avoid the double black-eye for the hosts as England B (Daryl Peach and Chris Melling) also got booted out by Finland early Saturday.

Semifinal matches are still a race-to-9 affair and format shifts to a race-to-10 in the championship round.
