Watch Serge Ibaka, Robin Lopez NBA brawl in Raptors-Bulls game
Toronto beats Chicago in OT, 122-120
The Chicago Bulls have dominated the Toronto Raptors in recent meetings. The Canadian team stopped the bleeding with a stirring 122-120 comeback victory on Tuesday night. However, besides the big win for Toronto, there was also a huge fight between centres Robin Lopez and Serge Ibaka, both of whom threw punches and almost connected to the face of their rivals.
Both Lopez and Ibaka were ejected after the incident. It’s likely as well that both big men are suspended in their respective team’s next game plus they are facing possible fines from the league.
"You don't want to have something lingering like that and go a couple of seasons where you can't beat a team. When you're a competitor, just to have that in the back of your mind, it sucks,” Raptors' DeMar DeRozan told Associated Press (via ESPN).
Because of the wild incident, most overlooked the fact that the Raptors came back from a big disadvantage, down by 16 points in the third quarter and still won the game. This collapse could be big for the Bulls down the stretch of the regular season as it is battling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Bulls had won 11 in a row over the Raptors before Toronto got the win on Tuesday. Before the victory, the Raptors’ last win over Chicago was on Dec. 31, 2013.
However, this game was about two NBA All-Stars, DeRozan and Jimmy Butler. Both exploded on the game, with the Raptors star finishing with 42 points plus 7 rebounds and 8 assists. The Bulls star matched him with 37 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.
This was an unfortunate collapse from the Bulls, who had four of their starters finish in double-figure scoring. Rajon Rondo played well with 24 points and 8 assists, while Lopez had 12 points and 3 blocks before he was ejected.
For the Raptors, Corey Joseph helped out DeRozan with 19 points and Ibaka had 16 points and 6 rebounds before the scuffle. The Raptors improved to 42-29 after the win and just a half a game behind the Washington Wizards for third place in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, the Bulls dropped to 33-38. It is now two games behind the Miami Heat for the eighth and final playoff spot.
