Westpac restores ATM, EFTPOS after IT glitch
Westpac (ASX: WBC) has now restored ATM and EFTPOS facilities following an earlier outage triggered by an air-conditioning fault at a data centre.
The bank said this fault has now been rectified and customers can now conduct banking transactions as per normal across ATMs, EFTPOS, telephone banking and in branches.
It said its immediate focus is now on restoring full functionality to online banking.
Westpac Group Executive Retail and Business Banking Rob Coombe said: “Westpac sincerely apologises to all our customers who have been impacted by today’s outage.
“We take systems reliability extremely seriously and are very disappointed by the inconvenience to our customers and will undertake a thorough review.”
Westpac encourages all customers who have any concerns about fees that may have been incurred as a result of this outage to contact their local bank manager or a customer service representative on 132 032.
Earlier today, Westpac and St George customers reported having difficulty accessing online banking and retrieving cash from some ATMs and EFTOS facilities.
IT glitches are not rare occurrences among Australian banks. National Australia Bank has been hit by several blows in recent months. A technology problem at the Commonwealth Bank allowed customers to withdraw extra money from their accounts in March.
